Sununu Rescinds Eviction, Foreclosure Freeze

Gov. Chris Sununu rescinded a pair of executive order recently that froze foreclosures and residential evictions statewide during the coronavirus pandemic.

The orders will end on July 1.

Under Emergency Order 51, every eviction notice issued based in part or in whole on nonpayment of a rent bill that came due between March 17 and June 11 must give tenants 30 days to vacate their unit.

Housing advocates fear the state may face a wave of evictions on July 1 thanks to back rent that many laid-off tenants in the restaurant and hotel industries accumulated during the crisis. While the state is returning to work, it is unclear how many businesses have survived the shutdown and whether those that survived will recall all their laid-off workers.

For his part, Sununu told the New Hampshire Union Leader that the state’s tourism industry will have a “survivable” summer season, but not necessarily a profitable one.
