Hampton Hotelier Plans Multifamily Units

With his staff being unable to find homes to rent in Hampton, local entrepreneur Al Fleury is proposing a 92-unit residential building at a prominent intersection in Hampton.

Fleury and his brother bought the site of a former antiques store at 495 Lafayette Road and have created a mixed-use development plan for the site, which stretches across a block in the town’s center. The multifamily building would be bracketed by a smaller restaurant building with four apartments above on one side, and an 18-room boutique hotel on the other. The smaller buildings, which are designed with an eye to vernacular New England buildings, screen the apartment block from the street.

Fleury, a Hampton Beach restauranteur and hotel developer, recently renovated and reopened the Surf House hotel adjacent to the beach.

According to the Portsmouth Herald, local planning officials have signaled their support for the project because it will bring more shoppers to the town’s downtown. The paper also reports that Fleury’s attorney told the town Planning Board that the project’s intent is to offer affordably-priced rentals, but the share of units that will formally be designated as affordable housing has not yet been decided.
