Bill to Require Destruction of Wood Stoves After Home Sale Spiked

Lawmakers in the state House of Representatives narrowly voted to recommend killing a bill that would have required many wood-burning stoves be destroyed when a home is sold.

Stoves built earlier than 1986, when the Environmental Protection Agency introduced new soot regulations, contribute disproportionately to air pollution in New Hampshire, the Concord Monitor reports.

The paper reports that lawmakers were concerned many older stoves do not carry manufacturing dates on them, meaning inspections would likely be necessary to determine if a home has complied.
