The state Senate voted along party lines on March 14 to suspend the state’s next round of business tax cuts and use the resulting $83 million to increase aid to municipalities.
All 14 Democratic senators supported the measure, while all 10 Republicans opposed it, the New Hampshire Union-Leader reported. The Senate then laid the measure on the table as a placeholder until it approves its version of the state budget this spring.
Senate Democrats said the cuts would disproportionately benefit out-of-state businesses like Amazon.
The House of Representatives endorsed a similar measure earlier this year. Gov. Chris Sununu has vowed to veto any suspension of business taxes.
The business profits tax has been cut from 8.5 percent in 2015 to 7.9 percent today and was originally scheduled to drop to 7.7 percent by 2021.
