The man who helped save Fenway Park is on a new quest to save one of New England’s historic gems, The Balsam’s Resort in Dixville Notch. After a vote in the state legislature, Les Otten’s plans suddenly look much more promising.
The group of developers seeking to rebuild a shuttered famed North Country resort The Balsams into the premier skiing destination in New England are offering equity stakes in the project in order to secure funding.
“Les Otten and his team strongly desire the ability to retain control over the project and build it, expand it, renovate the existing structures just as we have laid out,” spokesperson Scott Tranchemontagne told New Hampshire Public Radio.
Gov. Chris Sununu recently signed off on a law that permits Coos County commissioners to establish a redevelopment, or tax increment financing, district in the unincorporated part of Dixville Notch where The Balsams is located. The resulting $28 million bond would help jump-start the project’s $173 million first phase.
