M&T Bank to Reduce Overdraft Fee

People’s United Bank operates 25 branches in New Hampshire, all of which will become part of M&T Bank

Buffalo-based M&T Bank has joined the growing list of banks reducing or eliminating customer fees for overdrafts and non-sufficient funds.

The bank said in a statement Tuesday that the changes were made to “give customers more flexible options to meet their personal financial needs.” The bank added that the new policies would build on actions the company has taken in recent years “to empower customers to bank with more confidence.”

M&T said it would eliminate both the non-sufficient funds fee and the overdraft protection transfer charge for customers with a linked deposit account.

The bank will also reduce its overdraft fee to $15 and limit the daily assessment of the fee to once a day. M&T said the changes would take effect during the second quarter.

“Financial wellness is a critical component to the quality of one’s life,” Chris Kay, head of consumer banking, business banking and marketing at M&T Bank, said in the statement. “We’re committed to building a banking experience around our customers’ needs. The enhancements we’re making today, along with those we’ve made previously, make our banking services more accessible and give our customers more choice and flexibility in managing their finances – especially during challenging times.”

M&T also said it is committed to helping customers manage financial wellness and noted the bank’s membership in the Bank On coalition, which promotes safe and affordable bank accounts for individuals who are unbanked or underbanked.

M&T is expected to enter the New Hampshire market when it acquires Connecticut-based People’s United Bank, which has branches throughout the state. The deal, which was announced nearly a year ago, is still awaiting regulatory approval.
