Affordable ‘Tiny House’ Development Turns to Crowdfunding

Sullivan-based Knight Affordable Housing Solutions is partnering with area crowdfunding platform The Local Crowd Monadnock for an unusual way to finance its latest development.

The small-sale developer hopes to raise money in order to buy land for and permit a community of 400- to 600-square-foot houses on half- and quarter-acre lots with private parking and access to shared amenities like a community garden, kitchen and a recreation center.

Owner Ben Knight hopes to sell the units for between $100,000 and $150,000.

“My goal is to build and help others build their own smaller, more affordable homes in Keene and the surrounding area so that they can work less, play more and live happier lives” Knight said in a statement. “While living in smaller homes seems to go against what society expects of us and does takes a bit of getting used to, it offers tons of benefits such as lower monthly mortgage payment and utility bills, less space to clean, easier and cheaper to fix items when they break, easier to sell when the time comes, and of course all this means that you have more time and money to do fun things like travel and spend time with family.”

Individual donors will receive rewards for pledging money at various amounts, some of which have been donated by local businesses. A $50 donation will, Knight said, earn a one-on-one lesson on how to build a house or a martial arts class. A $300 donation will earn a customized set of drawings for a dream home and an itemized estimate. A $1,000 donation will earn a spot in the planned development.

More information and donation instructions can be found at http://monadnock.thelocalcrowd.coop. As of publication time, the project had raised 54 percent of the $7,000 Knight seeks.
