Controversial Dartmouth Dorm Gets Zoning OK

Dartmouth College has secured a key zoning exemption for a planned 397-bed dormitory strongly  opposed by some residents.

The Hanover Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously granted the Lyme Road residential complex its necessary zoning relief despite nearby residents’ protests about traffic and area “character” impacts. A petition opposing the project with over 400 signatures was submitted to the board, but current zoning allows a range of other intense uses on the site, including hospitals and assembly halls.

The Valley News reports the project must now go before the city Planning Board.

With more students than dormitory beds, Dartmouth is looking to help ease the Upper Valley’s housing crunch and the financial burden on students by building new housing in and around campus.
