Redevelopment Plans Unveiled for Concord Mall

Concord officials finally know what the owner of the decaying Steeplegate Mall wants to do with the property.

New York State-based Namdar Realty Group submitted plans to demolish nearly the entire mall, save its JC Penny store, and a nearby movie theater building. In its place, Namdar would build a mix of large- and medium-format retail buildings and apartments.

The 625 apartments in conceptual plans recently filed with the city are shown split among five 4- to 5-story buildings, and divided evenly between one- and two-bedroom units.

The plan identifies nearly 400,000 square feet of retail, including a gas station and stores for existing tenants Zoo Health Club and the Hatbox Theater. A central, 173,000-square-foot retail building with no identified tenant, sits at the center of the site, which will largely be covered in hundreds of surface parking spots.
