Officials in Conway took a major step forward towards enacting a one-year ban on new hotel projects Nov. 14.
The Conway Daily Sun reports that Planning Board members voted unanimously to direct city officials to draw up a warrant article for the next Town Meeting that would stop new hotels, motels or commercial establishments 50,000 square feet or larger for one year.
Multifamily housing would be explicitly excluded from the moratorium, protecting several projects in progress.
The draft ordinance and warrant article are expected to be laid before the board on Dec. 8.
The intent, the paper reports, is to let town officials update Conway’s master plan in the face of concerns about the pace of development, a process which has only just begun.
